Shadowrun RPG - Ten Year Storyline
- Campaign 1 to 2 - A Street to Runner Campaign. This campaign started in 2009 and ran for five years, going from street level play to elite runner with the characters retiring to work for Horizon.
- Campaign 3 to 4 - A Street to Runner Campaign. This is a follow on campaign with a bunch of street level runners almost making it to the elite level before being betrayed by one of their own. It also ran for 5 years.
- Campaign 5 to 6 - A Runner to Prime Campaign. This is a two year campaign that concludes "The Shadows" Storyline that started in the first generation. The conclusion was rushed from a five year story arc down to three sessions.
Campaign 1 & 2 - Street to Runner - Generation one was run from the 29th January 2009 to the 22nd October 2013 and contained 102 Sessions, using 4th edition and the Anniversary edition rules. This campaign started in 2009 and ran for five years, going from street level play to elite runner with the characters retiring to work for Horizon.
This was my first foray into running the shadowrun rules set, up to now I had only played in games with two different games masters an I had a few enthusiastic players who loved the setting. So I did some preparation work, read some novels and bought the books. This was around the time 4th edition was released but I did not have much of the books at the time i started with the fourth edition rulebook and while the book was released in 2005 and I picked it up an Canberra game convention Cancon just before starting the campaign.
Shadowrun has had a bad run with being stocked or accessible here in Australia as I have only seen one store in Sydney (4 hrs drive) that had them on their shelf, even though many stores could order them in. It was cheaper most of the time to order interstate or international that it was to go through a local retailer.
I had more players than I needed for a single group, so I worked out running two groups might be a good starting point and started talking to players about building characters. For this game I wanted people to “create a character they want to play” instead of “fill a spot on the team” as story can work around limitations, and sometimes that limitation makes the story. As such I asked them not to coordinate character creation but just make something they are inspired by.
The concept of the game was they were all runner level characters starting out in the Shadows not knowing anyone else who does this and about to go on their first run.
Group 1 came to me with a unique character concept, a mage, who used mind control powers to get what he wanted in the shadows. This group had three players and each player while slightly different was built on the same theme. I loved it, made an interesting starting point for the campaign. The rest of the group fitted around the character nicely.
Group 2 came to me with a two unique characters and four interlinked characters who had been running for years as a team. So they failed the character creation test, and were unhappy with not being experienced runners and all their back story amounting to boosting cars gear from those who can’t afford to protect them better. Their game story lasted one session before we closed it off. But it did generate some good plot hooks that stayed in the game for more than a year.
I organised the games into years as part of running them to see what plots would last, or be resolved over that time. This campaign was designed from the start to be a character driven narrative, meaning that players define the story, not set adventures, though that does not stop them for getting something they had not planned or expected.
The first storyline lasted for five years before all the characters were retired and a new group of characters were brought in. The new characters were called gen 2 and they will be detailed in a another series of post.
Over the next couple of posts I will go into each of the years (or seasons) of the story talking about rules, characters and plot hooks that happened. The first year was meant to be 2070 until I picked up the Emergence supplement and then shifted back the game date one year to make it still playable in the correct timeline.
Here is a breakdown of the 1st Gen campaign by rules edition and year.
Campaign 1 - Street Story – 4th Edition Shadowrun -
37 Sessions from 29th January 2009 to 26th November 2010
Year 1 (2009/2069) 20 Sessions – The Origins Story – Sessions 1 to 19,
and a playtest. 20 Sessions from 29th January 2009 to 7th December 2009
Year 2 (2010/2070) 18 Sessions – Emergence – Session 20 to 37. 18
Sessions from 19th January 2010 to 26th October 2010
Campaign 2 - Runner Story – Conversion to 20th Anniversary Edition -
65 Sessions. 9th November 2010 to 22nd October 2013
Year 2 (2010/2070) 3 Sessions – Emergence – Session 38 to 40. 3
Sessions from 9th November 2010 to 7th December 2010
Year 3 (2011/2071) 23 Sessions – Ghost Cartels – Session 41 to 63. 23
Sessions from 18th January 2011 to 20th December 2011
Year 4 (2012/2072) 24 Sessions – Dawn of the Artefacts – Session 64 to
87. 24 Sessions from 3rd January 2012 to 18th December 2012
Year 5 (2013/2073) 15 Sessions – Horizon – Session 88 to 102. 15
Sessions from 12th March 2013 to 22nd October 2013
Conclusion of a Character Arc - After playing through part of the storyline, characters did not touch on as much of it as I would have liked and we did not get to experience as much of the published material as we did with the Artefact storyline.
There are no regrets with this as it was fun and we did have character advancement. Those that chose to work for the corporation at the end of the 1st Generation storyline.
Campaign 3 & 4 - Street to Runner - 80 sessions from 5th November 2013 to 21st March 2017. This is a follow on campaign with a bunch of street level runners almost making it to the elite level before being betrayed by one of their own. It also ran for 5 years.
5th Edition character creation is planned for this campaign. This is part of the reason the other characters were retired so that we could start afresh with some new characters. But as we are continuing the storyline it has been decided to be the second generation closing out the 5th game year and starting with a Street Level storyline of characters.
Street Level Edition -
Year 5 (2013/2073) – 4 sessions (103 – 106) – Horizon from 5th
November 2013 to 17th December 2013

Year 9 (2017/2077) – 5 sessions (178 – 182) – Stolen Souls from 10th
January 2017 to 21st March 2017
Campaign Outline - Sessions 103 to 182. 80 Sessions from 5th November 2013 to 21st March 2017.
New characters are members of a Television Reality Show that is based around a bunch of wannabe Shadowrunners being live on the matrix performing staged (they believe) runs against various strategic locations around the world.
They are all beginning with no ties to Seattle, all new characters can’t have ties to Seattle either. Though through play they could build it up. During their runs they would be able to call in for advice, use their P2.0 ratings and comments, and catch the feed of their show live. Working with Horizon closely was the theme of the 2nd Generation.
It is the Years 2073 - A new beginning and none of the characters are from Seattle, have no contacts there, but are all being roped into a single squad by Horizon who brought them all together as part of a TV game show called Shadowrun Anonymous.
They could call in their previous characters for advice on what they should do in one of the gameshow episodes. Though they could do their own runs outside of this, but they would not be able to receive any support for those runs from their Horizon corporation. This was an interesting concept and a new direction for the players to see what would become of the continuing storyline threads left by Generation One.
Campaign 5, 6 & 7 - Runner to Prime Runner - This is a two year campaign that concludes "The Shadows" Storyline that started in the first generation. The conclusion was rushed from a five year story arc down to three sessions.

This was a side campaign designed to test out the rules with the Shadowrun players as well as challenge them with in a vitual world that would become more restrictive as time passed until they figured out how to circumvent the restraints.
While the game started strong, the players took every restraint with loud complaints and no variations, so had no real challenges to the storyline, and in the end it was abandoned due to complaints and missing the planned for interactions.
