Underworld 93 is a club in Puyallup, Seattle. Only slightly less famous than
Dante's Inferno or the Club Penumbra among the shadow scene, it already existed
in the late 2040, and was still open in the beginning of the 2070s.
The club is located in the center of Puyallup, in the concrete building of an
old warehouse.
You go to "Underworld 93" if you want to experience the really big bands in rock
biz in Emerald City life on stage, and also to attend concerts of the hottest
newcomer bands shortly before their big breakthrough. However, the "Weekday
Eclipse" in Denver, when it comes to new discoveries in the biz, has already
outpaced the "Underworld" in Seattle. The club is frequented by many runners,
and various meetings and handovers take place here, but most just come to hear
live music and to experience the musicians.
The hall is dominated by a large stage and dance floor as well as the latest AR
and sound systems and has two large Holoplex neon signs at the entrance. There
may be better places to dance or chill in the Plex, and other clubs may have
more atmosphere, but the "Underworld" is the club where all the great artists
play when they stop off on their tours in Seattle.
Among other things, Maria Mercurial gave a legendary first concert here in 2047,
and the multi-racial hard rock band Devil's Playground played here just before
the start of their first North America tour, which ended so fatally. Other major
bands and artsits known to have played there include Concrete Dreams, DarkVine,
JetBlack, Shield Wall, CrimeTime and Melody Tyger.
The club belongs to a community of owners, whereby an ineradicable rumor says
that a dragon is a silent partner, who is sometimes supposed to visit the
restaurant in a meta-human form.
The club was managed by a number of managing directors during its existence.
The late Al Castanzo was succeeded by a dwarf named Vincent O'Halloran who,
however, made the mistake of trying to cut the connections of the management
of "Underworld" to the yaks, which could not go well: he only lasted 15 months
before he ended up dead in a dumpster a few streets away. The new managing
director is Annette Harris, a former exec of MegaMedia, who was able to put the
relationship with the Yakuza in order without at the same time seriously
annoying the mafia, which required a fair bit of balancing act.
Security-wise, the Yakuza often provides protection for the club.
Underworld 93 is a five-story tall, converted warehouse. The inside has
been guttered out, and the interior still has a post-industrial, rust-belt
look.
Areas 1-5 and 12-13 are built up to about three meteres higher than
street level. A sweeking ramp leads down to the main floor of the club.
Club Entrance - Two Kromeglow marquees tower up the walls,
laying glowing leteres over vids of the rockers who perform at the
club. At the top of each marquee shines the Underworld 93 logo:
Charon steering a high-powered speedboat across the River Styx.
Main Doors - Newt the Troll guards these, deciding who gets
in and who gets turned away. Stairs lead up to the lobby.
Private Entrance - This entrance is for passholders, guests
of the club, and other folks not subject tot he haddle of rules and
regs. Stairs lead up to the lobby.
Coat and Weapons Check Booth - An Armour Glass window connects
the booth to the lobby.
The Lobby - There is usually a press of people in here,
meetin' and greetin'.
Spiral Staircase - This is one of serveral spiral staircases
around the club that lead up to a bewildering array of catwalks,
balconies, and booths attached to the walls or suspended over the
main floor. Lining these area are tables for those who prefer not to
rub bodies down on the main floor. Widows let folks on the balconies
look out at the folks trying to get in.
Rest rooms -
The Beast! - This is a complex, ten-meter high, bald,
bullet-headed figure. Sidney Murdoch calls this the "mascot" of
Underworld 93, but refuses to elaborate on this private joke. Lasers
flash from the sculture's eyes and its body is swathed in holograms,
puffs of mist, and neolux tubing. A huge speaker im the statue's
belly pounds out the music being played onstage. Subliminal images
in the shimmering holos flash message such as "Question Authority" or
"Love is the Law" at onlookers. Unwary visitors to the Underworld
have been known to become hypnotised by starting at the Beast too
long.
Table Area - Crammed to capacity with tiny tables and chairs
that must have been designed by the Spanish Inquisition, this area
is usually crowded with people hovering to grab a table when one
frees up.
The Bar - The bar is presided over by Tellin and staffed by
a half-dozen barkeeps.
Storeroom - Stored here are items such as liquor, cleaning
supplies, and glasses. The alcove outside the door, next to the
bathroom, is Tellin's private office, where he handles his little
information exchanges.
Sidney Murdoch's Office - This is staffed by a recepionist.
Durting the day, a couple of wound-be rockers or their agents are
usually sitting here waiting for an audition.
Sidney Murdoch's Office - This is the main office, one wall
is covered by a trid-screen, where Sidney can call up shots from
various cameras scattered around the club.
Dance Floor - During Maria's sets, the foor is jammed, but
most people are just jazzing in place while they listen to the
music rather than really dance. When the floor is in full flight,
however, trying to cross it expsoes you the a musical form of
aggrivated assault. A board ramp leads down to the dance floor
from the upper level and lobby.
Backstage Door - Desk and cahir for the doorman.
The Stage - Scattered about are a tangle of cables, music
generators, sythlink interfaces, and so on. The state is built
about two meters higher than the dance floor. The front of the
stage is roped off from the dance floor by railings, and the
cleared area is jammed with speakers, laser generators, trid and
vid units, mood blasters, and other hi-tech rocker toys. A
bewildering array of lighting units hangs on trees and frids over
the stage, as well as various grids hanging over the dance floor.
The enormous vidscreens (shown in dotted lines) hang at the
back of the stage, reaching almost to teh ceiling of the
cavernous club interior.
Backstage Area - See Backstage tab.
