Mystara of the Five Spheres D&D Downtime Learning a New Weapons Mastery Rank

USES ONE OF THE DOWNTIME ACTIVITIES FOR THE DURATION

Downtime activity for learning new ranks in Weapons Mastery. When a character gains levels, their level training includes the class and level bonus weapons mastery advancement.

It is up to the player to justify the check they are going to use and to describe their teachers as part of the training process, adding to the lore of the setting. The teacher will only train with that check type. Settlement modifier might apply. Finding teachers of the Skilled rank or higher can be done during play, and is considered arranged for you during the 8 week downtime at the end of the game year.

Check - Each week of training has an melee or ranged skill check versus a DC based on the rank of weapons mastery to successfully complete it. A natural 1 caused the task to fail. A natural 20 reduces the cost to learn by a week (minimum of one week). You can choose to succeed on a failure if you also take a complication.

Note - A secret craft check with the Weaponologist can be used in place of the melee or ranged attack. Also if a magic weapon is used, its attack bonus is also added to the ckeck to learn the new rank.

• Rank 1 - Proficient (Tier 1 - Level 1-5)
• Rank 2 - Skilled (Tier 2 - Level 6-10)

• Rank 4 - Master (Tier 4 - Level 16-20)
• Rank 5 - Grand Master (Tier 5 - Level 21-25)

Learning breakdown

• Note - Can be done while travelling (not all downtime allow this)
• Base Check DC = 10 + twice rank of weapons mastery
• You have access to the weapon and a Teacher who knows the weapon rank is available. Add 5 to the DC if neither is available, or 10 if both unavailable.
• Each additional weapon learnt thought downtime that is beyond class and level advancement add a +1 to the DC check for learning weapons at that rank.

• Skill Check = d20 + melee/ranged attack bonus + Settlment Modifier + Lifestyle Modifier + Renown
• Secret Craft Check = d20 + craft bonus + Settlment Modifier + Lifestyle Modifier + Renown + Circle

Complications - Complications arise while training typically involve the teacher. This increases the cost of learning the weapons mastery rank by one week per point that the character missed the target number.

Teach Weapons Mastery - Instead of learning a weapon you can choose to instead teach a weapon you have learnt, gaining half the cost of the training each week. You can only teach weapons you know. This might require approval of the local guilds or governments.

Based 5E does not provide skill increase beyond proficent with the weapon and only reduces the attack if your not proficient.

GM Notes - Design Decisions made while working on this downtime

Originally I had set aside learning weapon options and proficiencies at a lower rate, now it takes as long as the character needs to make the check.

New Weapon Options - 20 gp per week - 2 weeks (DC 12 Int check).
Armour or Shield Proficiency - 20 gp per week - 2 weeks (DC 12 Int check)
